Literary Letters #2 : Into the Forest, by Jean Hegland

I'm pleased that we were able to come up with a viable alternative novel for you to read, Becca, and I appreciate your candidness when explaining just why The Things They Carried was not an appropriate novel for you, right now.

In responding with your second Literary Letter, I'd like for you to reflect upon the following when reading Jean Hegland's novel, Into the Forest:

Into the Forest seems to convey that the stripped-down life of a hunter-gatherer would be better for us as a species. What Nell and Eva do is clearly right for them. Would it be right for people in general? For women? Is it a tenable ideal for any but the very young, very fit, and very adaptable?

  1. Into the Forest seems to convey that the stripped-down life of a hunter-gatherer would be better for us as a species.

I don’t understand where you got this Idea.

What Nell and Eva do is clearly right for them.

I did not get the idea that what Nell and Eva do is clearly right for them, they simply did what they had to do to survive.

Would it be right for people in general?

I don’t think this life style would be right for most people today. People today, for the most part do not have the problem solving skills needed, the tenacity, or the will to live without constantly being entertained by an outside source. If you feel you are entitled to better than this, don’t enjoy work for the sake of working or feel the need to take shortcuts to do less work this is not the life style for you.

    For women?

Why do you single out women as if they weren’t part of the human race? Personally I would be more inclined to wonder more about if a man could keep up. I suppose this is because I know of several women who live like this and no men. Of the women I know who are the most successful there isn’t even a man in the picture.

Is it a tenable ideal for any but the very young, very fit, and very adaptable?

The lifestyle itself will keep you young, get and keep you in shape and teach you to be adaptable. With this type of lifestyle you can save money because you will no longer need that membership to the gym. You won’t have to find time to exercise to keep in shape because everything you do is exercise of one form or another. I would recommend it more for older folk than the young because the older folk have more life experience.
